John Rufus Alexander (of Capt. Reece's Company), actually made it back home alive. Of the eight men who eluded recapture after the first escape attempt on February 11, 1843,  John Alexander and a Major William Oldham were the only two to make it back alive.

They arrived in San Antonio on April 5, 1843. John Rufus, blind in his old age, dictated his story to his son, Rufus M. Alexander, on July 13, 1897.  Rufus C. Alexander, of San Marcos, Hays County, has the original manuscript.

John Rufus Alexander died at his home in Round Mountain, Blanco County, in 1908 at the age of 92.
